#WhatIsThat?

The Critical Mass takes place since 1992 all over the world and in Germany there are also many participating cities. To build a Critical Mass a lot of cyclists meet seemingly unorganized to drive in a big swarm through the city. The motivation behind this project is to draw attention to the cyclists belongs and their role in traffic.

Wikipedia-Entry about Critical Mass

Legal Background

The German Law says in its §27 StVO that a group of at least 16 bikers counts as a league, which allows them to drive side by side on the road. Also the rest of the group is allowed to cross Red Light, when the people in the front crossed the traffic lights when they were green.

In Würzburg the Critical Mass takes place every month! Bike for your rights!

#WhyTakePart

Every year thousands of cyclists get injured in accidents on German Roads. In 2013 there died according to the German Department of Statistics 354 bikers and more than 71.000 got hurt because of an accident.
For sure - the situation in some cities is even worse compared to Würzburg - but it's not exactly brilliant. A goal of the Critical Mass is to raise awareness for the needs and the situation of cyclists as road users. In fact you are biking for your rights! ;o)
And apart from the deeper meaning - it's also a lot of fun!

NO! There is no need to register, just step by and join us! We're happy for every cyclist taking part at the Critical Mass! :o)

What else do I need to know?

Don't drink and drive ;)

Have a heart for edgy car drivers.

Drivers in front only cross green traffic lights.

Don't use the opposite lane.

Drive safely instead of showing off.

Protect the group by corking.

And what the #*! is corking?

When the group passes a junction some bikers of the front group block the crossing roads to withhold the car drivers from driving into the Critical Mass. This is to prevent redundant risk for all road users. When the group passed the junction, the Corkers close up.
Important: Never cork the contraflow and - of course - never cork service vehicles like emergency, police or fire department.
